Patience is a virtue that is not only taught in schools across the world, but also across faiths and religions of the world across time. As love and happiness can grow, so to does patience in us. Patience is more than just waiting, tolerating delay, tolerating suffering without getting angry or upset – patience can be time for us to reflect on the cause of the delay, the cause of suffering and allow us to react to better benefit ourselves, our connection with God/The Higher Power, and all life around us.
Sikhism: Sri Guru Granth Sahib pg. 8
“Let self-control be the furnace, and patience the goldsmith. Let understanding be the anvil, and spiritual wisdom the tools.”
Islam: Quran 16:126
“If you take retribution, then do so in proportion to the wrong done to you. But if you can bear such conduct with patience, indeed that is the best for the steadfast.”
Christianity; Bible, Old Testament, Proverbs 15:18
“Hot tempers cause arguments, but patience brings peace.”
Christianity; Bible, New Testament, Galatians 6:9
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Buddhism: Quote from Thich Nhat Hanh
“Patience is one of the marks of true love”
Native American: Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Tribe
“We live, we die, and like the grass and trees, renew ourselves from the soft clods of the grave. Stones crumble and decay, faiths grow old and they are forgotten, but new beliefs are born. The faith of the villages is dust now . . . but it will grow again . . . like the trees. May serenity circle on silent wings and catch the whisper of the winds.”
Walk a thousand miles, you may find nothing, but wait a thousand hours and you may find something. Patience allows us to see the flames of hate for what they are and allows us ways to put out the flames for the benefit of all life. Patience allows us to see how love and happiness can grow and be shared with others. Patience allows us to see how anger grows and cut it down. Patience allows us to see there is a better life for all life on earth and all humanity.
Be well and be safe and healthy.
